I am majoring in Japanese and Economics. My university in Germany specializes in Asian languages, so we have a lot of partner universities in Japan, Korea and China. I chose Sendai for my year abroad because while it is a major city, allowing me to live the Japanese urban life, there is also quite a lot of beautiful nature here. Miyagi is also famous for its Onsen, and I have enjoyed many visits to these hot springs. I’d been studying Japanese, both self-study and at university, for several years before coming to Sendai, but it was still a small culture shock to barely understand the language and Japanese customs at first. Immediately after arriving I was worried whether my Japanese level would be enough to manage the every-day life in Sendai, but through the kind guidance of the global support students and the International Affairs Office I soon got used to life here. The spacious dormitory for foreign exchange students is close to both campuses as well as the heart of the city, Sendai Station. All of my teachers have been both patient and helpful, allowing me to gradually get better at Japanese over this past year. Beginners will have no problems starting out either, as there are classes going over the very basics of Japanese as well. All of the other exchange students, most of them from various Asian countries, have been a lot of fun to be around as well, and interacting with them has opened my eyes to many other cultures. I enjoyed my time in Sendai immensely and will miss it a lot once it’s time for me to go back home.

I am currently studying in the Department of Japanese Language and Culture in Taiwan, and studying in Japan had always been a goal of mine. Through the exchange program at TGU, I was finally able to live that experience. It was a truly meaningful opportunity that not only improved my Japanese skills, but also helped me grow through various experiences outside the classroom. To make the most of my time, I first joined the international student club, which held weekly language exchange sessions. These gave me the chance to speak Japanese with native students and other international students in a relaxed and fun environment. Occasionally, we also had special events, such as a Christmas party, which made the experience even more enjoyable. In addition, I joined the pop dance club. Through practicing for performances, I was able to connect with Japanese students who shared the same passion for dance. These experiences not only allowed me to express myself, but also helped me build meaningful friendships through a common interest. Overall, living in Sendai was comfortable and convenient, and I quickly adapted to daily life. After returning to Taiwan, I hope to use what I’ve gained to help connect Taiwan and Japan through language and culture.

- Master’s Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering
I’m Binita Shah from Nepal, currently studying on a Master’s course in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tohoku Gakuin University. Choosing the right university is one of the most important decisions for any student, and even more so for me as an international student. The main reason why I chose TGU was that it offers comprehensive support for international students. Moving to a new country takes most people out of their comfort zone, but thanks to TGU’s support, overseas students can enjoy studying abroad and can gain a wealth of knowledge at the same time. Located in the heart of Miyagi Prefecture, transportation and daily living are easy. Academic advice and language support are both easily available. In addition, TGU provides a range of opportunities to learn about Japanese culture through workshops and local events. One of TGU’s strengths is that it is always ready to give advice and support. The international friendships I have formed here through college events and workshops have expanded my worldview and taught me how to collaborate across cultures — a skill that will prove incredibly valuable in today’s interconnected world. If you are planning to study abroad in Japan then I heartily recommend Tohoku Gakuin University. My experience at TGU has taught me that this is the place where international students can combine cutting-edge research with practical experience to boost their academic knowledge and career prospects, whether their field is engineering, business, the arts, languages, or something else.
